With McDonald's, Redbox is changing video rental.
written by Allan on January 10, 2008

Has anyone seen these dvd rental units called "redboxes"? They're stationed at various McDonald's locations. The pricing model is $1 per day per dvd rental. With the amount of locations McDonald's has this could be the easiest way to physically rent dvds. This is another step towards minimizing the #1 expense of running a company, labor.
Semi-related: I read a while back about Movie Gallery doing a "double drive-thru mini store prototypes", I am surprised I haven't seen more about this. Seems like someone besides Redbox/McDonalds needs to make a run at Netflix. Link to Case Study about Movie Gallery's Prototype **Also note Movie Gallery filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.

There has to be a specific market that these operations are going after because it seems that the people willing to use this arrangement would be willing to use NetFlix, especially as more and more of consumers come to expect services to be available on the web.
NetFlix doesn’t even have to pay for those units…their infrastructure has already been installed…the US Postal Service. They have drop-off locations everywhere and delivery right to your door. :)
I think these boxes are geared toward impulse buys, Netflix requires a little planning ahead. One thing Netflix can’t please is the friday/saturday night impulse to rent a movie.
Allan, you bring up a great point.
I bet that these RedBoxes see quite a bit of business from Netflix subscribers.
Netflix should buy RedBox, and include RedBox DVDs in users plans, the same way they do with movie streaming.
That would put them in every market, and be another incentive for consumers to join Netflix.
